A group of hugely talented youngsters that I met at a music workshop in Jo'burg

Covid-19 impacted all our lives. There was rarely a greater need for effective leadership across all sectors - public, private and voluntary - leaders with fresh ideas about how, when and where people live, work and play.
This was quite 'an ask' especially for those who'd had little or no training in leadership or management. So I decided to use the 'lockdown' to develop this website in the hope that it will help guide our way back from the abyss.
I have drawn much of the content of this website from Leadership Masterclasses I created 3 years ago for the UK's charities sector. Some of the topics will be familiar to those who have been leading for a while. For those new to a leadership role, the website may appear to contain a bewildering range of ideas. But don't be daunted. It's a fascinating journey as I hope you'll find on the following pages.
Let me introduce myself. I am Clive Burgess and today I live in England in the heart of Hampshire. During a long working life, I have managed and directed organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. My leadership skills were given structure when I designed and ran courses in the UK and Asia. Some lasted days, others weeks. I was inspired and guided in much of this during a six month secondment to the Industrial Society where I had the good fortune to come across John Adair, the leading light in leadership training. I then went overseas with the Standard Chartered Bank to manage various staff and line operations across Asia and Africa before returning to the UK to test my entrepreneurial skills by launching my own group of companies. I then took a year off to go to university and graduated from Cranfield with an MBA. Then fate took a hand and I spent six years directing NHS hospitals. More recently, I have been involved in theatre management, run festivals and worked with a group of GPs to set up Wiltshire CCG. I now chair two SMEs providing recycling and waste management services to the UK's commercial sector and advice to overseas governments on how best to manage Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).
Now let me provide you with a roadmap to the four sections of this website.
Lead - papers on leadership including approaches to leadership (qualities, situational, functional), leadership styles, motivation, group dynamics, etc. If you read these papers in the order listed, you'll find that they follow a logical thread.

Manage - papers about management in general, some of which might prove particularly useful at this time, e.g. working in small groups; writing terms of reference for group projects and some ideas I'd like to share on the shift from generalist to specialist and the challenge of managing multi-professional organisations.
Musings - some papers about management that I've written over the years.

Miscellany - papers that augment the leading and managing sections including appendices for the film 'Twelve O'Clock High' and a couple of papers about things that interest me (and might you) - festival management and the Asian elephant.
I'd recommend treating this website as something akin to a dressmaker's mannequin or tailor's dummy. View the topics, especially those about leading, as providing a foundation on which to tailor your very own leadership profile.

Finally, I hope that some of the ideas and practices mentioned - especially those concerned with task forces and working as small project-led groups - will prove a useful and practical starting-point when you are unravelling issues and looking for possible solutions, particularly at this time of such uncertainty.
